An interview with Bcreative, SL’s DJ Extraordinaire

If you talk to anyone about exceptional DJ’s in SL more likely than not the name Bcreative Wilde will come up. Bcreative has been in Second Life DJ’ing for three years rocking the tunes and entertaining at a multitude of events. Having just recently celebrated her 3rd birthday DJ’ing last December, Bcreative treats each event as if it were her first making each show special and entertaining for all. Unlike our Feature Articles featuring other SL content creators, we have a unique opportunity to speak with an individual who creates their content on the fly, a skill requiring a level of daring which few posses.

SLS: Hey B, thanks so much for taking the time from your busy schedule to speak with us.

BW: Hey no problem. I'm excited I got the chance to talk to all of you at SLS. *waves to everyone*

SLS: Society has been fortunate to have you DJ two of its events so far and you did a great job. The places were packed and you were received well. When setting up for a venue, what considerations do you account for?

BW: Over they years I have learned to make sure any question I have in my mind is answered. I consider location, what kind of audience am I playing to, music genre expected, who your contact person is for the event, time and date of course, if tip jars are allowed, and the most important one of all I've learned over they years to discuss payment or no payment.

SLS: For many people music is a very personal thing and an extension of who they are. If left to decide the venue, what musical format would you choose to go with and how do you separate personal taste from what is perceived to be a more favored song list?

BW: I'm know for being creative! *giggles* Most know I enjoy music of the darkness goth and metal. Some that know me really well realize I dig to find lesser known groups. I also love playing undiscovered artists as well. So I do throw a lot of personal taste in there but I toss it to the audience I know enjoys that style of music. Playing things that not everyone else plays is what many have commented on that they enjoy about my shows. For instance think of the person that likes to hang out a popular metal venue in SL . They might sit through 3 or 4 DJs and hear the same songs over and over each set. I think of those people and try to mix it up. I love playing requests though. If people are enjoying what they are hearing then I've done my job well.

SLS: I’m sure that you view each opportunity to DJ as an opportunity to grow and meet new people. Can you say that there have been times where you thought, “ugh, I really don’t wanna do this”? And how did you motivate yourself to work the event?

BW: oooh LOL yeah! I can think of a few of those cases in my 3 years. They usually are events that you realize are not planned out very well once you arrive to DJ. You just try to make the best of it. I try to concentrate my energies on if the people attending are having a good time. That's what I'm there for!

SLS: Do you have a regular venue where you DJ at, or is each event a one-time event?

BW: I do both actually. I currently DJ for Aphex High Studio at "the high.", LE CIMETIERE, Bikini's Beach Club, and ASpiRE! Radio which will be broadcast from my own club "The Log-Inn" starting Jan. 16th. I have DJed many one-time events such as the two I have done for SLS in the past and many others in the last 3 years. I've even worked for RL businesses in SL such as H & R Block and the NBA which were both ESC events and Microsoft and Alcatel Lucent hosted by Millionsofus.

SLS: Do you have a fan base? If so tell us about them.

BW: I love my fans! I have a big fan club of well over 100 members that have been bitten by my beats. Any one can join "DJ BCREATIVE'S FAN-G CLUB" if they are interested in catching my shows. I do most of my annoucing in the group. I have many fans that have stuck with me for ever like the ever so popular skin goddess Munchflower Zaius and even a few 80's party lovers I've given the title as my "Wilde Boys."

SLS: For those who may wish to venture into the world of DJ’ing, I’ve noticed that your profile has a very helpful link to resources for the internet DJ. How often are you asked to “teach” DJ’ing? Do you teach, and if so are there fees to your instruction?

BW: Yes glad you noticed that web site. Http://www.onlinedjwiki.com was put together by Nexeus Fatale another well known DJ in SL who is my mentor and dear friend. I helped him with the section on DJing with Sam while he covered the Winamp section. I used to get asked to teach DJing alot but to be honest I'm a bit to busy with my gigs, going to grad school in RL, working full-time RL and trying to find time just for myself to create or have my own fun. However questions are welcome. I've helped many get themselves set up or just answer a simple question or two. No I don't charge for questions only right answers. LOL JK

SLS: What is your fee structure? And how much advance notice must a person contact you in order to book you for their event?

BW: My fees for regular SL events are 1000L per hour or 2500L for 3 hours. Special events such as weddings, birthday parties and major SL events are a flat rate of 1500L per hour with a 2 hour min. The special event price includes working with the customer to create a special play list for their event. I also do RL businesses in SL which I accept USD or L$ and rates are discussed on an individual basis. RL businesses wishing to have me DJ their events should contact me personally. I do give discounts for new clubs and charities and I also will work with places on a budget. Don't let my prices scare you. IM me you never know. I'm a big supporter of Relay for Life in SL and I do any RFL event for free. I will say the bigger notice the better but I have been know to do last minute events. The longest advanced notice I've had was for The RFL Clothing Fair (http://www.slrflclothingfair.blogspot.com/) March 17-23, 2008. They booked me clear back in October of last year.

SLS: Your partner is Tempus Heart and is from Norway, and I believe he’s had some influence in your life lately because you are now learning Norwegian. How is that going? Norwegian is not a language commonly taught in our school systems. Have you ever been to Norway and/or do you have plans to visit there anytime soon?

BW: Aww yes, Tempus is my sweetie from across the ocean. I'm "trying" to learn Norwegian or Norsk as they call it. At least I can say "Jeg elsker deg" which is "I love you" in Norwegian. Isn't that all I really need to know? LOL Actually I'm planning on visiting Tempus in July which to answer your question will be the first time I've been to Norway. So no booking events July1-15 this summer.

SLS: It appears as though you are a multi-faceted girl who is also an artist and the owner of Dark Passions Mall. Why don’t you tell us about your mall and what you sell there and what other vendors we can expect to find?

BW: That is one of the lesser known facts about me. Many don't know I own Dark Passions Mall. We recently move the location, redesigned it and threw a big party a few days ago. I love the new look and many others do too. I'm not much for camping but we only had room for one grave digger in the cemetery. Tempus and I created a Gravedigger Camper which we also plan to sell soon. I currently sell Scripted Wings from my own original drawings. They are Hud controlled, 40 different tints, flap Speed, 4 Wing sizes, fly mode, flexi on/off, invisibility, flap on and off, Inner/Outer Flap. I also sell a few clothing items and tattoos as well. Other designers featured at Dark Passions Mall are Confined, Isabella Esotrica Designs, Nocturnal Threads, Bewitched Designs, Pixel Threads, Angels & Demons, Chrystin's Emporium, Dark Depressins, Self Expressions, Dark Angel, FallnAngel Creations, AVid, Magnus Designs, Goth1c0, PrimAdonna, Beckenbauer Productions, Nomine, and Tempus Heart Designs. As you can see by the designers Dark Passions Mall caters to the goth and punk community of SL. Back when I started it over 2 1/2 years ago it was one of the few of its kind.

SLS: And as for art, how long have you been working as an artist? What are your favorite mediums?

BW: Wow, art has been a part of my life since I was little. I believe around the age of 8 and through out high school I painting business widows for holidays and festivals for extra spending cash. I love painting really with any painting medium. However as you can tell I'm not bad with a pencil either if you have seen some of my wing designs. Hehe! Though I've been messing with Photoshop lately I don't know nearly enough about it but I'm learning.

SLS: What are your biggest artistic influences in your life? What trends do you tend to follow in your artistic style?

BW: Hmmm influences.... No one in my family other then myself can draw more then a stick figure. LOL I did have some great college professors that really inspired me to think even more outside the box. I will say the artist that inspires me the most is Van gogh. He has been my favorite artist since I saw his work. As far as trends I don't follow them I make my own trends! * Points to her own name* LOL

SLS: Having been in SL as long as you have I’m sure you’ve witnessed change, some good and some bad, over time. For instance, when I started playing SL there might be 18k people on-line and issues with lag, drops, lost inventory, etc were very rare whereas it seems to be a weekly problem now. However we now have sculpty and flexy prims, and many other features we didn’t have during that time either. How do you see the development of SL? Do you see it developing for the better, or do you think maybe the Lindens should spend more time fixing the bugs and less time introducing them?

BW: Time for the "back in my day" speech! Well I remember a time without prim hair and when you could see all of SL when you opened the map because there was only half of the main continent in existance back then. SL has gotten so big it used to be you knew quite a few of the people in SL because everyone went to the same parties. Gone are those days. I will say though I wish they would fix the bugs and lag, I like the new things. Windlight makes me love taking pictures again and I can't wait til they bring it to SL and out of the testing stages. Less lag would be nice but if you want less lag the go prim naked. It will cure most of the lag issues in SL but believe me it won't be pretty. I've been there, I've seen it, and lived it! LOL

SLS: Ok, tell us about your next event and where we can find you. Do you have your schedule posted here on SLS for us all to see? *gets paddle ready in case B says no*

BW: LOL *Eyes up the paddle* Yes I do have a schedule posted on SLS. I do try to keep it up to date as much as possible. For a more accurate schedule with my random events check the first pic in my profile.

SLS: Thank you BCreative for talking with us! You’ve been great and you’ve really helped support Society since the beginning. We hope to see you around for a long time ato come, and look forward to having you DJ our future events!
